Lancashire Chess Association

A great effort by all the players on Saturday 12^th May 2012 in Northampton! Having qualified in the 6^th and final place from the northern Zonal and having to face traditionally very strong southern-based teams, we knew that our relatively inexperienced squad would have a huge battle on their hands to secure any points. The fact that they managed to win 15 points was commendable, but particularly pleasing was the way that every single one of them played – slowly, carefully and tenaciously, not yielding anything easily. Excellent by everybody! And a big improvement on the Zonal – Bill’s coaching session definitely had an impact.

Many of the squad will be back again next year for the U11s and we intend to equip them better next time around, through more regular coaching and help with their preparation. We know we have the talent in Lancashire – we just need to make the most of all the potential! Watch this space for developments…

We wish our Year 6s all the best as they head towards secondary school and hope that they will continue to enjoy their chess and put themselves up for selection for the Lancs U12 squad – we will be in touch! They will also be eligible for the coaching that we lay on and they will continue to be very welcome at all Junior Congresses (last one of the season coming up on 9^th June in Aughton).

Finally, thanks to everyone who helped out yesterday – Bill and Dave for their coaching and encouragement before and during the event; Gavin and Matt for Board Stewarding; Nick and Bill for minibus driving; and, of course, all the parents for their constant time and effort, without which there wouldn’t be a chess squad!
